Comments by Jeremy Kroto, First Vice President

After the Annual FireFigher (IAFF) Convention in March...

...Day Three consisted of a final political briefing by members of the IAFF Legislative and Political Action staff and a commentary by Philip Dine, author of the book State of the Unions. This book, given to each Affiliate Leader that attended to conference, is a groundbreaking and powerful report about the current state of the labor movement in the United States.

The book describes how various labor unions, including the IAFF, have continued to accomplish tremendous goals in a time where the labor movement has become diminished in our country. The author goes on to illustrate how labor can strengthen the middle class, improve the economy, and bolster its political influence. The book is highly recommended by me and every labor leader I have met that has read the book.

Wes Brain's Comments after Interview with Dine

Enthused upon seeing Philip Dine on CSPAN's "Book TV" earlier this month (12/2/07) I was able to make contact and schedule him as our guest interview for today's radio show. This guy is great! He understands labor very well having been a 20 yr. reporter with the St. Louis Post Dispatch newspaper (introduced on the CSPAN show as "the best labor reporter in the country") and I am sending to you the strong recommendation that you read his book and consider Phil Dine's analysis of our failing labor movement and more importantly his ideas for how to rebound and become a strong force again.

I'm sending you this note because it is rare for me to become so enthused and charged up. I want to encourage you to get Phil Dine's new book and see if this might spark within you some enthusiasm, too. We can rebuild our failing labor movement!

Clearly it is time to stop doing things the same old way expecting different results!

Labor Reporter's Book Shows Why Unions are More Important Than Ever In a highly touted book packed with colorful anecdotes and careful research, a veteran labor reporter examines what's happened to organized labor in the United States and what workers and unions can do to rebuild their movement and America's middle class. "It is no overstatement to say that labor has contributed mightily to what has made America work - - and what has made it unique," writes Philip Dine in his recently published book "State of the Unions: How Labor Can Strengthen the Middle Class, Improve Our Economy and Regain Political Influence."

Dine, a Pulitzer Prize-nominated labor reporter at the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and member of The Newspaper Guild-CWA Local 36047, looks at the corporate, political and economic forces that have resulted in a nationwide drop in union membership and what labor needs to do to reverse that trend. Among the positive examples he cites is CWA's Stewards' Army. "In a time of increasing disenfranchisement of average people, of growing gulfs between the haves and have-nots, labor's most important role may be to serve as a vehicle for the voices of people who are being drowned out," Dine writes.

The book's many fans include Mike Wallace of CBS News who said, "Phil Dine tells a compelling tale (and he writes beautifully) of the decline, fall and potential rebirth of a powerful labor movement in the U.S." TNG-CWA President Linda Foley said Dine "has produced a must-read for both union members and members of the press. 'State of the Unions' - - with its keen observations and thoughtful conclusions - - could be a primer for labor leaders and labor reporters." The book is avaliable at most book stores.
